Sardis, A Lifeless Church ( Revelation 3:1-6 Continued). In short, it is Christ in His fullest but most general ministerial and ecclesiastical aspect, viewed, of course, according to the tenor of the book. (c) He must have the ability to tell what he has to say, so that his witness may make its true impression on those who hear. "So then because thou art neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. thou wert cold or hot. There is positive evidence of the most convincing and satisfactory kind for the insertions, omissions, or changes, which may be mentioned from time to time. (b) It is just possible that there is a reference to the custom of branding a slave with the initials of his owner to show that he belongs to him. the Jews). Through the lower town flowed the River Pactolus, which was said in the old days to have had gold-bearing waters from which much of the wealth of Sardis came. The Lord was pleased to afflict after the declension from apostolic purity, and above all from first love. (1.) First, their Jewish antagonists would eventually have to acknowledge that the Christians were the true followers of God (cf. In Jesus' name, Amen. How stand the facts? There were, I doubt not, some saints true to His name, though it was not the time when they were led or forced into the position of a remnant. No wonder that Laodicea could boast that it was rich and had amassed wealth and had need of nothing. Those ministers that are pro-abortion and pro-pornography and pro every other evil that comes down the pike, who dress in clerical robes and claim to be ministers of Jesus Christ but are really of the synagogue of Satan. That stands for the gift of citizenship in the city of God to the faithful Christian. We shall never grow stronger by leaving the eternal word. He who is the first and the last, comprehending all in communicating His mind, which includes everything that can be given to man He it is who here speaks the Lord God, the Eternal. "I became dead (records John), and, behold, I am alive unto the ages of the ages." Revelation 3:10-11 New King James Version 10 Because you have kept [ a]My command to persevere,I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come uponthe whole world, to test those who dwellon the earth. I will confess his name before the Father. He says, "Just open the door and I will come in and eat with you. Are we content to be little, my friends? I had sooner stand alone then yield with a crowd to an Act of Parliament which was passed to dictate to me the form in which I may worship God. Let us give honour to whom honour is due, and encourage those who are aiming to do right. [2.] The Sardians had thought themselves too safe to need a guard; and so Sardis fell. [1.] The common text which gives rise to the current versions spoils the sense completely. Victory lies before you. I believe that is something that God is going to do. The Protestant reads the Bible more at liberty, which is a real good and precious boon; but for this very reason, the Protestant incurs no light responsibility. This saying does two things. "Blessed is the man whom thou dost chasten, O Lord, and whom thou dost teach out of thy law" ( Psalms 94:12). He will eat supper with you. Now, the Jew would not eat with the Gentile. Tell them that this or that is to be found in the Bible, and they look amazed. Solon, the wisest of the Greeks, came on a visit and was shown the magnificence and the luxury. This is exactly what is not true of Philadelphia, which is rather formed after a rejected Christ. If a disputer can once get you away from the Bible, he can swallow you alive; but if you will keep to Scripture, and handle this weapon, "It is written; it is written," the disputer may be the arch-fiend himself, but he cannot possibly get the victory over you. This medical school was famous for two things throughout the world, ointment for the ear and ointment for the eyes. Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I will also keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth." Laodicea, The Church Condemned ( Revelation 3:14-22). I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth; this hour seems to refer not to any of the vials which will be poured out on the antichristian states, but to some affliction and distress which will befall the reformed churches, and will light upon the outward court worshippers among them It seems to be the last struggle of the beast of Rome, and to denote some violent and sharp persecution, such as what Daniel mentions, that never was before nor since; but it will be but short, but one hour, the twenty fourth part of a prophetical day or year, perhaps about a fortnight; yet it will be very extensive; it will reach all the world, the whole Roman empire, and all that dwell upon the earth, that are called by the name of Christians, and will try them, whether they are so or not; Christ will now have his fan in his hand, and purge his floor of all his formal professors and hypocrites; and it will be known who are his true churches, and pure members; and these he will keep close to himself, and preserve safe amidst all the distress and confusion the world will be in. This church is commended: Thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name,Revelation 3:8; Revelation 3:8. "And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, a. In the temptation you will fall, for indeed you are fallen already. They had abated in their first love. The meaning would be the same, Jesus is one whose promises can be relied upon. [Note: Chitwood, p. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and will have my meal with him, and he with me. Keep to the truth, and the modern school will give you a wide berth. The tragedy of Laodicea was that it was convinced of its own wealth and blind to its own poverty. (i) It has been taken as a warning that the end is near, and that the Coming of Christ is at hand. 1. Recall from Revelation 1:9, perseverance, or patience comes through trial and tribulation. They are waiting for Him expectantly without such an idea as His thief-like surprise. He who was emphatically the apostle of the uncircumcision was the appointed witness of Christ to those who had been Jews. The Greeks had three meals in the day. I know it from this fact that, as a general rule, the man that keeps God's word has an open door before him. (b) The things a man must do lie to his hand. "Behold," says the Risen Christ, "I am standing at the door and knocking." What is the meaning of this open door? The phrase is the strongest possible way of putting the matter. Behold, I will make them come and kneel before your feet, and they will know that I have loved you. 3:7-13 And to the angel of the Church in Philadelphia, write: These things says he who is holy, he who is true, he who has the key of David, he who opens and no man will shut, and shuts and no man opens. Revelation Unwrapped: Commentary on Revelation by John Richardson. When the prodigal son returns, it is the best robe that is put upon him ( Luke 15:22). They are supposed to be not marked by such mighty doings, as Sardis was, Sardis did great exploits, Philadelphia nothing of the sort. For the posttribulational interpretation, see Mounce, p. 119; aand Ladd, p. Jesus will protect Christians who persevere through trials (cp. That peace came with the dominion of Rome. This is the reason why they were golden. Philadelphia, Many Promises ( Revelation 3:7-13 Continued). But more than this, it is Christ seen according to the largeness of His glory. Believe you God's word, and you have wrought a god-like work. Also, both churches received their opposition from the Jews.He who carries the key of David has the authority to allow people into or shut them out from the city of David, which here is symbolic of the new Jerusalem, the kingdom of Jesus Christ (7; cf. This too is special. Undoubtedly the inference is mistaken; still there is no possibility of charging the writer with putting himself forward in the manner in which he has written. "Behold, I come quickly!" cit., p. 101. Flaccus, the governor of the province, became alarmed at the amount of currency which the Jews were exporting in payment of the Temple tax which every male Jew paid and put an embargo on the export of currency. They could do but little where money would be required. We can hardly suppose that this name was given to it after it received the Christian religion, and that it was so called from that Christian affection that all believers have, and should have, one for another, as the children of one Father and the brethren of Christ; but rather that it was its ancient name, on account of the love and kindness which the citizens had and showed to each other as a civil fraternity. He will reward them at his return (10-11). If a man will open the door, Jesus Christ will come in and linger long with him. In a certain sense it was better to be a Daniel in the midst of ruin than to have had the best position when times were prosperous, and when things looked fair. People in Philadelphia well knew what security lay in a promise that "they would go out no more. I have the key of David. The revelation of grace is precisely what is not found in this book. For justification this is manifest; for a rule of life it is not so apparent, but it is just as real a denial of the gospel. They have exercised this influence in all ages, and this is where, as I judge, their formation as a system is stigmatized by the Lord Jesus Christ. I trust that many of us can say that the doctrines of grace are our jewels, our estate, yes, our very life. To those who have been true the promise is that they will walk with God. There is an open door before you which no man can shut. I have added it all up, and I count the reproach of Christ to be greater riches then all the treasures of Egypt." The star is that which acted on the assembly; it professedly was the vessel of light from the Lord for bearing on the condition of the saints of God. It was not till midway through the fourteenth century that it fell; and to this day there is a Christian bishop and a thousand Christians in it. It was thus that Hanum treated the servants of David ( 2 Samuel 10:4). It is the fruit of the patience of God to a sinful world; it sets before men the exemplary patience of Christ in all his sufferings for men; it calls those that receive it to the exercise of patience in conformity to Christ. It was theirs, they heard it and had no wish to hear anything else. The stated ground that follows is also to be weighed; for it is not, as men often assume, because we are to be in the predicted circumstances, it is not because the Christian or the church must pass through the troubles it describes: not a word to this effect is implied, but a different reason is given. This then would describe the lasting honour which Christ pays to his faithful ones. (i) In the heathen world no worshipper was allowed to approach a temple of the gods with soiled clothes. Did He not look with exceeding satisfaction in His grace upon that servant who felt and answered to His own feelings about His people? Those who have been true to God will some day walk with him in Paradise. Why, these are the treasures of men, and they shall pass away. And though Catholics are miserably deluded, Protestants do not understand justification to this day. The condemnation of Laodicea begins with a picture of almost crude vividness; because the Laodiceans are neither cold nor hot, they have about them a kind of nauseating quality, which will make the Risen Christ vomit them out of his mouth. Here we are evidently on broad ground. It is the second meaning which is intended here. This Means You ( Revelation 3:14-22 Continued). They may have only a little strength; their resources may be small; but, if they are faithful, they will see the dawn of the triumph of Christ. God's threat passed on by Nahum to the disobedient people was: "I will let nations look on your nakedness, and on your kingdoms shame" ( Nahum 3:5). And it was then that he uttered his famous saying to Croesus: "Call no man happy until he is dead." cit., p. 119. It has two aspects of meaning. (i) It was a great banking and financial centre. If, then, you are not on the watch, I will come as a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you. Is not this the revival of that dreadful scourge that had afflicted the early church (even Smyrna)? First I would remind you that our text has in it A WORD OF PRAISE. Holy is the description of God himself "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts," was the song of the seraphs which Isaiah heard ( Isaiah 6:3). Christ puts them in mind of what he had done for them: I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it, v. 8. Not a bit. All was the fruit, doubtless, of what had been works before, but in far greater maturity now. 290. "In him," says Paul, "all things were created" ( Colossians 1:15; Colossians 1:18). Hot food and cold food can both be appetizing, but tepid food will often make the stomach turn. We may safely strike out the word "and," if we respect the best authorities. These were said to be the treasures of the church. The Lord at the close gives a promise suited to the condition. "The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest on my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands. Every word of Christ's presentation of Himself differs from the view of Him given inRevelation 1:1-20; Revelation 1:1-20. John 8:31-59). But no man knows when eternity will invade his life and God will bid him rise and come; and that must warn the careless to prepare to meet his God and cheer the oppressed with the thought of the coming glory of the faithful soul. Not all the clothes in the world will beautify a person whose nature is twisted and whose character is ugly. The ground of such a thought lies in the fact that the introduction to Sardis indicates the Lord beginning again a new state of things. . That is what the Philadelphian Church would see, at least in its beginnings, if its members were faithful. Pharaoh honoured Joseph by clothing him in vestures of fine linen ( Genesis 41:42). "I am the Lord, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King" ( Isaiah 43:15). It is a fact of life that certain things sharpen memory which has grown dull. The mind of man sends forth pure water and impure, and it is hard to discern between the two; but from the heart of God there wells up, undiluted and unmingled, a stream of living truth which is more for man's benefit than all else out of heaven. Writing to the Corinthians of the work which lies ahead of him, Paul says: "For a wide door for effective work has opened to me" ( 1 Corinthians 16:9). This hour of testing will involve the "whole world" (Gr. Such is the strength of the promise and the blessedness of it, that the Lord promises His own to be kept from the time. for thou hast a little strength ( Revelation 3:8 ). When we are called upon to show endurance, the endurance of Jesus Christ supplies us with three things. (i) The Risen Christ says: "Remember how you received and heard the gospel." . Go out of the place saying, "I believe it." 11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. . Croesus took it as a promise that he would annihilate the Persians; it never crossed his mind that it was a prophecy that the campaign on which he had embarked would be the end of his own power. It could mean, either, that Jesus was the first person to be created or that he began the process of creation, as Trench put it, "dynamically the beginning." Not at all: the Christian ought to remember that he is a heavenly man, not an earthly one. "Kings shall be your foster fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers; with their faces to the ground they shall bow down to you, and lick the dust of your feet" ( Isaiah 49:23). He seems to say, "Dear child, since you will not go beyond my written word, you shall not be tempted to go beyond it. Nay, but as we cling to God in feebleness, the divine strength of the word is infused into our souls. He was not in the least worried, for he thought that all he had to do was to retire to the impregnable citadel of Sardis, recuperate and fight again. And he was apologizing, but he went into the house of Cornelius. The New Testament frequently likens sin to death. Revelation 3:10, KJV: Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. After the death of Alexander there were many claimants for the power. Philadelphia, City Of Praise ( Revelation 3:7-13 Continued). In Revelation 3:3 we have a series of imperatives. So says he "To the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come." To those who have kept his word, Christ promises, I will keep you from the coming hour of trial, which will put those who dwell on the earth to the test. 1. The garments made there were famous over all the world, and the wool of the sheep of Laodicea was a luxury article which all men knew, But, says the Risen Christ, Laodicea is spiritually naked; if it wants really to be clothed it must come to him. He that receives it shall live, but without it there is no spiritual life. I must be crushed out of existence before my convictions of the truth of the doctrines of grace in the old-fashioned form can ever be taken from me. That is the way in which the Church at Laodicea affected the Risen Christ. The Book of Life is a conception which occurs often in the Bible. Go ahead! Our last point was to be A WORD OF PROMISE; for, according to the tenth verse, it is written, "Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth." Hence it is not said here that He walks in the midst of the seven lampstands: that was ecclesiastical strictly. We will speak upon the text to-night with a view to that, and we shall notice, first, that there is a word of praise: God praises this faithful messenger of the church. The voice of this mighty angel is also similar to that of the strong angel who asked Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals? Persistent faithfulness and devotedness still characterised them at Ephesus. Hence what judges Protestantism is this, that they have the testimony of God's word much more fully than those who had sunk into the mere ecclesiastical formalism of the middle ages. I am coming quickly. There can be few of us who have not experienced the power of some habit into which we have fallen. Christ is no longer the loved and only object of the heart; nor is there the sense of the blessedness of His coming, which leads into waiting for Him; still less is there a glorying in weakness that the power of Christ may rest on them. (ii) The Christian must be on the watch against the wiles of the devil ( 1 Peter 5:8). And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: (1) he who has the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars, says this: I know your deeds, that you have a (2) name that you are alive, but you are dead. The spiritual usage of seven in prophetic scripture cannot be questioned. And in the twenty-second chapter of Isaiah in verse twenty-two, well, go back to twenty-one, we read this prophecy concerning the Messiah, "I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. For a considerable period of human life, it may be, God does not give to all of us a field of usefulness, but he provides a field of trial. The reason is as solemn as it is instructive. They may express either the reason why the door stands open before the Christians of Philadelphia or the reason why they will be given those who belong to the synagogue of Satan. "Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not." But the people of Philadelphia well knew what it was to receive "a new name.". (a) In the ancient world white robes stood for festivity. Wake up to holy energy. It is now Christ Himself, and this as One that faith discovers in new beauty, not dependent merely on visions of glory which had been seen before, but Christ as He really is in Himself "He that is holy, he that is true." Shocks were an everyday occurrence. (John 5:1-47) Yet with all this another feature betrays John, and suits him as the writer most strikingly. Therefore, as it is a holy thing, a heavenly thing, a priceless thing, keep you God's word. If he speaks of Him as the Lamb above, the description is founded on His being the rejected sufferer on earth. Possibly they were little, too, in those things which go side by side with grace: I mean in knowledge, and in power to utter what they knew. The connection of the Son with creation is frequently made in the New Testament. And next week as we get into chapters four and five. A man should live every day as if it were his last. This meaning is particularly appropriate for Philadelphia. Two other roads passed through the gates of Laodicea, that from Pergamum and the Hermus Valley to Pisidia and Pamphylia and the coast at Perga and that from eastern Caria to central and west Phrygia. The faithful, staunch, God-fearing men that would not budge an inch, or change a letter, or shape a syllable, to please all the kings and princes of the earth, shall be found to praise and honour in the day of the Lord's appearing. That can happen with the tasks of God. As Beasley-Murray said, "This is not a designation of a period of time, but of the trial itself. Read commentary on this popular Bible verse and understand the real meaning behind God's Word using John Gill's Exposition of the Bible. The word of my patience The doctrine which has exposed you to so much trouble and persecution, and required so much patience and magnanimity to bear up under its attendant trials. Sardis, Watch! ." Rev. There is for the faithful Christian the promise of a settled serenity in the peace which Jesus Christ can give. Revelation 3:1. The answer is given by the last clause when "and" is taken away: the visions that he was going to behold and record in this book whatsoever things he saw. Impossible to believe that e.g. "Let us not sleep, as others do," writes Paul to the Thessalonians. He did not expect great things from them. Is this Christ? It is the fulness of the Holy Ghost's energy as an overruling power. "I am the Alpha and Omega, saith the Lord God, that is, and that was, and that is to come, the Almighty." Too many of us are Christian one moment and unchristian the next. The star, as we are told here, so far acted upon the church for good. Second, God promised the Christians in this church that they would not go through the Tribulation period (Revelation 6-19). The beginning of the third chapter introduces the protestant state of things. The epistle is closed up with the demand of attention: He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches, how Christ loves and values his faithful people, how he commends, and how he will crown their fidelity.
